JACKSON CENTER — Jackson Center’s talented volleyball players had a little more on their minds than just getting the season off on the right foot Monday. Their coach, Kim Metz, was going for another milestone in her long and successful career, which is now in its 20th year. The Lady Tigers took care of business, though, beating New Knoxville 25-19, 25-9, 25-10 to get Metz her 300th victory, all at Jackson.
“I never dreamed I would be coaching long enough to accomplish this,” said Metz. “But I’ve been very fortunate. I’ve had great support from my family, from the parents, the players, the school… And I’ve had outstanding players. “The girls had a lot on their minds tonight,” she added. “They were extremmely fired up and I thought the first-game jitters were apparent. We played a little hesitant, but then we really got going in games two and three. And we served extremely well, which was good to see. “I’ve had a lot of fun doing this,” she said. “I would like it to last forever.” Casey Gates came up big at the net, blasting 27 kills and adding nine digs. Allissa Ware had 12 kills, eight digs and two aces, Cortnee Sosby had 22 assists, Bethany Hoehne had 18 assists, and Tara Spicer had four aces, two blocks and seven digs. Cathcart took over this season for Fairlawn’s volleyball coaching legend, Wade Wilhelm, and admitted to feeling some jitters going into the opener at home against Covington. But her girls took care of things, beating the Lady Buccs 25-21, 25-15, 26-24 to go to 1-0 on the season. “The girls played great,” Cathcart said. “Our defense was much better than I expected. It’s nice to get that first one out of the way.” Mindy Hughes finished with 18 assists for the Lady Jets, Leesha Bolton had six kills and led the defense with 18 digs, Courtney Davidson had a big game, with 13 kills, six blocks, five digs and two ace serves, and Kaitlin Patrick had five kills and nine digs. The junior varsity game went to Covington. —— Russia evens mark PLEASANT HILL — The Russia girls evened their record at 1-1 on the season by beating Newton 25-6, 25-12 and 25-14 in non-league play. “We jumped out and controlled the entire match,” said Russia coach Lori Smith. “It was nice to see how the girls responded after our loss to New Bremen on Saturday. Our setters did a nice job of moving the ball around, and it was a good team win.” Roni Homan had 15 kills and seven digs for Russia, Mary Schulze had eight digs and five aces, Kristin Drees had 15 assists and two aces, Morgan Griesdorn had 10 assists and three aces, Sam Daniel had five kills, Alyssa Drees four aces and Kristi Borchers six digs. The Russia reserves won 25-8, 25-9. We still have a long way to go but this is a great first step.” Bethany Hoelscher had 19 digs, Hillary Ferguson 17, Andrea Holthaus 13 and Tessa Benanzer 10 for the Lady Redskins. Hoelscher also led in kills with 10, Claire Ruhenkamp had eight and Holthaus six. Loramie also took the JV game 24-26, 25-23, 25-22. —— Botkins falls to 1-1 NEW BREMEN — New Bremen went to 2-0 and dropped Botkins to 1-1 on the season in action at Bremen. Botkins took the first game 25-23, but Bremen the next three 25-11, 25-10, 25-9. “We played well in the first game,” said Botkins coach Bryan Trego. “After that, we could never get into any kind of rhythm. But we’re young, with six sophomores on the varsity. And it will take us a while.” Christie Fullenkamp had a big game, pounding out 19 kills to go with nine digs. Jenna Schmerge added five kills. Megan Fullenkamp and Morgan Fullenkamp both had nine digs, and Morgan and Hannah Geyer led in assists with 12 and 10, respectively. Bremen also took the JV game 25-7, 25-12.
