ANNA — Jackson Center made its claim for at least a share of the County volleyball title Tuesday, shocking league-leading Anna in three games at Anna, 25-22, 25-21, 25-19. The verdict leaves the two county powers tied for first in the county at 9-1. Overall, Anna is 17-3 and Jackson 16-3. Anna has county games remaining at Fort Loramie and at home against Fairlawn, and Jackson has Fort Loramie at home and is at Fairlawn.
“This was a great win,” said Jackson Center coach Kim Metz, whose team is ranked No. 2 in the state in Division IV this week. “The kids played well and they all pulled together, whether they were on the floor or on the bench. Everybody was cheering and pulling together.” Casey Gates was unstoppable at the net, pounding out 28 kills for the Lady Tigers. Allissa Ware added 18. Gates added 12 digs, two aces and two blocks, and Ware led with 23 digs. Cortnee Sosby had 28 assists, two aces and eight digs, and Bethany Hoehne added 21 assists. Tara Spicer had 12 digs. “Jackson Center came to play,” said Anna coach Karen Zumberger. “They played well and played smart. We looked like we were back on our heels a little, and they did what they had to do to win. They’re looking good at the end of the season, and we need to regroup and work on things.” Anna, ranked third in Division III, got 17 kills from Kelli Barhorst, 12 from Laura Gehret, 33 assists from Kelsie Zumberger and 23 digs from Maria Meyer. “I wouldn’t say we were confident going into the game because we know Anna has great tradition and we respect that,” said Metz. “What I think is that we were very focused and excited to play.” Jackson also took the junior varsity game 26-24, 25-17. Botkins beats Loramie FORT LORAMIE — Botkins upped its county mark to 5-5 and went to 10-9 overall with a 25-16, 25-23, 26-24 victory over Fort Loramie in action Tuesday. Christie Fullenkamp had a huge game for the Lady Trojans, pounding out 22 kills and 15 digs. “Christie played well,” said Botkins coach Bryan Trego. “She only have three negative hits all night.” Tricia Mullen had 16 kills and 12 digs, Nichelle Powell had six kills and 15 digs, Jessie Luthman finished with 33 assists and 13 digs, and Megan Fullenkamp had 11 digs. Fort Loramie, which falls to 2-8 in the county and 3-14 overall, Bethany Hoelscher had 13 kills, Andrea Holthaus had six solo blocks, Tessa Benanzer had 16 digs and Kelly Hoehne 13. Fairlawn wins 13th Fairlawn won its 13th game of the season, defeating Russia 25-22, 25-17, 25-17. The win puts the Lady Jets at 5-4 in the county and 13-6 overall. Russia is 4-7 and 6-12. Fairlawn was led by Amanda Francis with 24 kills and 20 digs. Jessica Prince had 13 kills, 18 digs and three aces, Courtney Davidson had 32 assists and three aces, Tiffany Hughes served four aces, and Katie Geuy added three aces. For Russia, Kristen Drees had 28 assists, Hillary Monnin had 11 kills and 15 digs, Katie Petty had seven kills and three solo blocks, and Roni Homan had 10 kills, nine digs and five solo blocks. The reserve game went to Russia 20-25, 25-22, 25-23. Lehman tops Bremen NEW BREMEN — The Lehman volleyball team finished a trip through a gauntlet of state-ranked teams Tuesday by defeating third-ranked New Bremen 25-22, 25-23, 25-27, 25-20. The Lady Cavs had lost to the top-ranked team in Division III, Versailles, Saturday and third—ranked Anna (D-III) in five games Monday. “It was nice to get a win over the third-ranked team in the state,” Lehman coach Greg Snipes said. “The kids did a nice job coming back from the tough loss last night. They came out and did what they should. These kind of matches will make you better down the road.” Sarah Lynch pounded 18 kills and Jessica Thobe had 18 kills and 12 digs. Jessica Slagle had 16 kills and 20 digs. Kirsten Slonkosky had six kills and 25 digs. Jenni Paulus had 15 digs and Marlee Wion dished out 50 assists. For New Bremen, Jackie Dabbelt had 14 kills, Taylor Jones 11 and Michelle Griesdorn 10. Griesdorn had 28 digs and Dabbelt 14, Jones had 23 assists and Becca Dwenger 24.
