COVINGTON — Houston led by seven at the half, then shut out Covington in the third quarter to open up a big lead on the way to a 39-18 victory in the season opener in girls basketball Friday. The Lady Wildcats got a double-double from senior Kimmie Replogle, who had 18 points and 13 rebounds. Jaclyn Willoughby added 12 poits for Houston.
“Covington is young, but they have some nice young players,” said Houston coach Greg Ward. “I was pleased with our defense. We kept decent pressure on the ball. Reserve score: Houston 24, Covington 21. —— Botkins falls at Wapak WAPAKONETA — Botkins has only seven full-time varsity players this season, so when starters Christie Fullenkamp and Jenny Schmerge both got in foul trouble in the first half, it hurt the Lady Trojans’ chances in the season opener against Wapakoneta Friday in high school girls basketball action. Botkins fell behind 30-14 at the half, and even though the Lady Trojans rallied furiously down the stretch, they came up short in a 61-45 setback. “We had the foul trouble, and they hit some threes to get off to a good start,” head coach Tom Platfoot said. “I was proud of the girls for fighting back like they did. We cut it down to six with a minute-and-a-half left, and missed a three that would have made it a three-point game.” Fullenkamp had 17 points to lead the Lady Trojans, including 9-for-10 from the free throw line. She also led in rebounds with seven. Schmerge added 10 points and was 6-for-7 from the line. As a team, the Lady Trojans hit 19-for-23 from the line, 83 percent. Botkins (45) L. Schmerge 1-0-2; C. First-year girls coach Herb Laughman had only one complaint after the game — 8-for-23 from the free throw line. “We addressed that right after,” he said. “We had the game wrapped up after three quarters, but missed some free throws and let them make a little bit of a run. So the girls know we have to improve.” Three Lady Jets scored in double figures, led by Katy Monnier and Courtney Shroyer, each with a dozen. Courtney Young finished with 10. New Bremen rolled to an easy 70-39 victory over Riverside, while New Knoxville knocked off Anna 46-36 in first-round games Friday night. New Bremen rolled to a 20-8 lead after a quarter, then opened it up to 41-17 at the half. The Lady Cardinals hit 25-for-54 from the field, a healthy 46 percent, and were 19-for-28 from the line. Stacy Timmerman hit 10 of her 15 shots and finished with 22 points to lead Bremen. LeAnn Topp and Jackie Dabbelt added 13 points apiece. • New Knoxvile jumped out to a 25-16 halftime lead and held the Lady Rockets off for the win. for Anna, Rebecca Burch was the only one in double figures with 11. New Knoxville was led by three players with 10 apiece in Taylor Arnett, Casey Horstman and Morgan Reineke.
