JACKSON CENTER — Houston’s dominance of county softball continues for another year, the Lady Wildcats clinching no worse than a share of their sixth consecutive league championship Tuesday with a 2-0 win over Jackson Center. The Lady Wildcats have a three-game lead with three to play, so an outright championship is a virtual certainty. “I told my assistant coach aftre the game, can you believe we’ve won six league championships in a row?” said Houston head coach Brent New, at the helm for all six.
The clincher didn’t come easy, with pitchers Kayla Wintrow of Houston and Casey Gates of Jackson dominating the action. Houston got a run in the top of the second, but Wintrow had to work out of a big jam in the fourth when Jackson got a single from Malari Himmeger and a double from Gates. But Wintrow got a pop up, a strikeout and a ground out to end the inning with no runs scoring. Houston then added another run in the sixth. Jaclyn Willoughby and Jodi Benanzer both doubled for Houston and Himmeger had three of Jackson’s four hits. Wintrow and Gates allowed just four hits apiece, with Wintrow striking out seven and Gates four. The first time the two teams met, she struck out 16. On Tuesday, she fanned 17 to pitch the Lady Indians to a 4-0 victory at Aschenbach Field. The loss left Sidney at 17-4 and put Piqua at 13-9. “She doesn’t throw really hard, but she hits her spots and she makes you swing at what she wants you to swing at,” said Sidney coach Wade New of Byrd. Sidney managed only three hits off Byrd, one a double by Lindsey Ciriegio.
