Monday, 14 April 2008

HARDIN — Houston pushed a run across with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 5-4 thriller over the Russia Lady Raiders in county softball action Monday.

The win keeps Houston perfect in league play at 3-0 and drops Russia to 3-1.

Houston was cruising along with a 4-1 lead after five innings, but Russia’s Marissa Gerdes electrified the Russia side with a three-run homer over the fence to knot the game up at 4-4.

It went to the seventh, and Danielle Monnier got on with a single and moved up when Jaclyn Willoughby bunted her way aboard. Jodi Benanzer then plated Monnier with a two-out single to win the game.

Willoughby had two hits, and Benanzer and Monnier both singled and doubled for Houston.

For Russia, Kristi Borchers had two hits, and Gerdes had a single to go with her home run.

Kayla Wintrow struck out eight and walked one for Houston. Amy Bensman fanned three and didn’t walk anyone for Russia.

Roddy hits walkoff

homer in Sidney win

Elyse Roddy led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a walkoff homer over the centerfield fence to give the Sidney Lady Jackets a 3-2 victory over Miamisburg in softball action at Aschenbach Field Monday.

The home run was the first ever for a Sidney player at the new field, and it raised Sidney’s record on the year to 8-1.

Sidney scored twice in the first and Miamisburg twice in the second, and it stayed that way until the eighth.

“Miamisburg hit the ball hard early, but Kristen Roby and Elyse (Roddy, catcher) called a good game and started pitching them different,” said Sidney coach Wade New. “And Kristen kinda took over.”

Roby finished with six strikeouts and two walks and also had two hits in three trips to the plate. Roddy also had two hits and drove in two runs.

Sidney had eight hits and four of them game in the first inning. After an out, Roby singled, Brandi Eustache singled, Roddy singled home one run and Kerri Adkins singled in another.

New also credited a defensive gem by Hillary Davis in the eighth with giving the Lady Jackets the chance to win. “I put her in in the bottom of the seventh, and she went out in the top of the eighth and made a great catch in right field,” he said.
