BAINBRIDGE - Keeping the game close for one half, the Hillsboro Lady Indians were outscored 30-16 in the second half by Piketon, dropping the non-league contest 52-28 on Saturday night at Paint Valley High School, in the Lady 'Cats Classic.

Hillsboro (0-2) started out the game by building an 8-2 advantage in the opening six minutes, with sophomore A.J. Sanders scoring the first points of the game with just under five minutes remaining in the quarter. Sanders finished with a team-high 10 points.

With more points from Sanders, junior Shelby Coyle followed with two free throws, giving HHS a 6-2 lead.

But after leading for the first eight minutes of the game, things began to slip for HHS.

Piketon's Holly Brabson brought her team within one point of HHS, then a 3-pointer by Alex Southworth gave Piketon a lead they wouldn't relinquish for the remainder of the game.

"We have to take care of the basketball. When we have 27 turnovers, we are not going to compete in a basketball game," Hillsboro head coach Herb Mihalik said. "We had a chance in the first quarter with an 8-2 lead and missed several shots in the lane. We should have scored 16-18 points in the first quarter, but we failed to finish the play."

HHS junior Jen Williams scored the first points of the second quarter for the Lady Indians late in the quarter, but Piketon continued to add to their lead, building an 8-point advanatge with 1:47 left in the first half.

Trailing 22-12 at the half, things didn't improve in the third, as Hillsboro committed four consecutive turnovers, while Piketon added to their lead.

Hillsboro was held scoreless in the third quarter until Sanders scored on a putback shot after gaining a rebound off the glass.

Piketon's Heather Burns ended the third with a 3-pointer, making the score 41-15.

HHS senior Kelsey Juillerat scored early in the final quarter to cut Piketon's lead down to 42-17.

Also scoring in the fourth quarter were Sanders, junior Heather Storer and Coyle.

Junior's Kayle Sexton and Megan Barnes also scored points in the game.

Piketon finished 5-for-16 from three-point range. Hillsboro finished 0-for-6.

The Lady Indians finished 11-for-32 shooting, while Piketon was 13-for-20.

Hillsboro committed 27 turnovers (Piketon finished with 10).

The loss drops Hillsboro to 0-2. HHS will host Wilmington on Wednesday at the Patriot Center, with reserve action starting at 6 p.m.
