By WADE LINVILLE Sports editor, The News Democrat Georgetown boys basketball coach Jerry Underwood and his G-Men captured a 54-53 overtime win in a barn burner against the East Clinton Astros. Last weekend's hard earned win nearly capped off league play for the G-Men in the 2008-2009 regular season and, for the fifth straight year, they are the Southern Buckeye Athletic/Academic Conference National Division Champions.
The G-Men still had one league game remaining as of Thursday, the Batavia Bulldogs. The Bulldogs are only one game behind the G-Men for first place in the SBAAC National Division, and the the G-Men journeyed to their place for the league finale. If Batavia pulled out a win over the G-Men, the two teams will share in this year’s SBAAC National Division Title. If the G-Men came out on top, Georgetown takes sole possession of the league title. “I’m pleased for our boys,” said Underwood. “We only had two kids with varsity experience coming into the season, but they worked hard and played well. I think our kids overachieved this season and we’re fortunate to be in a position to win the league again.” The G-Men held a regular season record of 11-3 and held an overall record of 12-7 following the win over the Astros. Underwood gave credit to the hard working group of student athletes who refused to settle for anything less than another SBAAC National Division crown. “It all goes out to our players. They put in the time and the hard work,” said Underwood. “They’re a great group of kids.” Georgetown junior Jess Chadwell led the way in the win with 24 points. Georgetown senior Calvin Cahall garnered 13 points in the win and fellow senior Zach Otto contributed with eight points. Chadwell has led the G-Men in scoring this season with an average of 24.2 points per game and a total of 436 points. In the win over East Clinton, Chadwell collected his 1,000th career point. The night before the narrow win over East Clinton, the G-Men captured a 63-48 road win over the Felicity-Franklin Cardinals. The G-Men have won six in a row coming into the matchup against Batavia and will face Miami Valley Christian Academy in the first round of the Southwest District Division IV Sectional Tournament at Loveland High School Feb. 27.
