Chadwell, Drake are SBC National Division Players of the Year

Another hair-raising season of hoops is officially in the books, and the Southern Buckeye Athletic/Academic Conference has released its all-stars for the 2007-2008 basketball season.
For the second year in a row, Georgetown High School cleaned house in the SBAAC National Division, claiming league titles as a team and having a male and female to take honors as the Players of the Year.

Of the SBAAC National Division Boys Basketball All-Stars, Georgetown sophomore Jess Chadwell topped them all to be named the Player of the Year. Chadwell missed the first few games of the season after breaking his foot in the preseason, but he made his presence known when taking the court after making his recovery. Chadwell led the G-Men in scoring for the season, averaging 19.6 points per game. At times it seemed Chadwell was unstoppable even when double-teamed. He also averaged around seven rebounds and four assists per game. The G-Men staked claim on their fourth consecutive SBAAC National Division Title this season, finishing with a 14-1 record in conference play. Tying for second in the SBAAC National Division were Batavia and Felicity-Franklin with 8-7 conference records.
Georgetown seniors Marc Gray and Dylan Kattine, as well as Chadwell were named to the SBAAC National Division’s first team of all-stars. Georgetown senior Neil Martin and Calvin Cahall were named to the National Division’s second team of all-stars.
Georgetown High School boys basketball coach Jerry Underwood was named the SBAAC National Division Coach of the Year for putting together yet another exceptional season.
Taking first in the SBAAC American Division was the Clermont Northeastern Rockets with a 13-1 record.
Rockets’ head basketball coach, Jerry Doerger, was named the SBAAC American Division Coach of the Year for also having a remarkable season.
Clermont Northeastern junior Jake Terry was named the 2007-2008 SBAAC American Division Player of the Year.
The Western Brown Broncos took second in the SBAAC American Division with an 11-3 record. Local high school basketball fans should look for big things out of the Broncos over the next few years to come, as third year coach Chuck Goodyear expects to bring an equal amount of size and more experience to the court next season. Western Brown junior Tyler Morgan and senior Nick Rymer were named to the SBAAC American Division’s first team of all-stars. Western Brown junior Ethan Fite was named to the SBAAC American Division’s second team of all-stars.
When speaking of the SBAAC’s successful high school girls basketball teams for 2007-2008, it would not be right to go without mentioning the American Division Champion Western Brown Lady Broncos and the National Division Champion Georgetown Lady G-Men.
The Lady Broncos finished the season with only one league loss, 13-1. Led by a talented, but young, group of players, the Lady Broncos were “hot on hardwood” throughout the season to claim this year’s league title.
With no seniors on the varsity roster, the Lady Broncos became the SBAAC’s “big school” champions with a mix of juniors and sophomores. Juniors Kayla Howard, Sam Attinger and Ashley Fischer provided the Lady Broncos with gutsy performances all season long, while sophomore guard Lauren Davis stepped up to play a leadership role on the court. Howard, Attinger, Davis and Fischer were all named to the SBAAC American Division’s first team of all-stars for 2007-2008. Despite the talented players that paved the way to an SBAAC crown for the Lady Broncos, it was Goshen senior Staci Hicks who received honors as the 2007-2008 SBAAC American Division Player of the Year.
For leading his young crew through an outstanding season, Western Brown high School girls varsity basketball coach Jon Crall was named the American Division Coach of the Year.
As for the SBAAC National Division, this year marked the eighth straight league title for the Georgetown Lady G-Men. The Lady G-Men hit a rough spot near the midway point of the season, suffering losses to Western Brown and East Clinton. Those losses marked the only two losses of the regular season for the Lady G-Men, and they bounced back to finish with a conference record of 13-2.
Leading the Lady G-Men in 2007-2008 was senior forward Chelsea Drake, who was recently named the SBAAC National Division Player of the Year. This year’s National Division Title topped off a magnificent high school basketball career for Drake. She averaged 15.1 points per game to lead the Lady G-Men in scoring this season. She also averaged 8.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 2.4 steals during the regular season.
Her ability to sink clutch free throws was a major key to the Lady G-Men’s success on the court this season.
After guiding the Lady G-Men to their eighth consecutive league, Georgetown High School’s Bernie Cropper was named the SBAAC National Division girls basketball Coach of the Year.
Georgetown seniors Courtney Mason and Drake were named to the National Division’s first team of all-stars. Georgetown freshman Kirsten Grant was named to the National Division Second Team along with senior teammate Aimee Adkins.
