LEESBURG - The Fairfield Lions scored seven points in overtime, rallying to defeat Southern Hills League rival Fayetteville 64-57 at Grandle Gymnasium on Friday night.
At the end of the first quarter, Fayetteville jumped out to an early 10-7 advantage, as both teams were still working on each team's strengths and weaknesses.
The second quarter, however, saw the Lions outscore the Rockets, 22-13, where Fairfield took a 29-23 advantage at the half.
Andrew McKay scored eight of Fairfield's 14 points in the third stanza, but the Rockets answered back with 16 of their own, trimming the Fairfield lead to 43-39 after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, timely shooting from Tyler Guenther and Mat Greene sparked the Rockets to an 57-54 lead.
With ten seconds remaining in regulation, the ball was in bounded, and senior Bryce Morris swung it to the right wing to McKay. McKay found freshman Chris Cox for a game tying three point shot as time expired, tying the game at 57.
In overtime, Cox scored all of Fairfield's seven points, getting things started with a three pointer from the corner, and then finishing off the scoring with four free throws.
"This was a real team win," Fairfield coach Matt Carson said. "The kids never gave up all night and fought for all 32 minutes. They weren't going to let anything keep them from getting this victory tonight. It was neat to see the crowd get involved the way they did. We've played four games at home already this season and the boys feed off the home crowd; it was a great atmosphere."
With the win, Fairfield improves to 3-2 overall, 1-1 in the SHL.
The Lions will travel to play Manchester on Tuesday, with the reserve game starting at 6 p.m.
