By WADE LINVILLE The News Democrat A long-time tradition carried on May 19, as athletes, coaches, fans and representatives of the Southern Hills League gathered once again to honor exceptional student/athletes who were blessed with success for the 2008 spring season.
This year’s SHL Spring Sports Awards Ceremony was held at Eastern High School, with SHL Commissioner Jerry Lewis present to announce the names of this spring’s winning teams and all-stars.
When speaking of high school varsity softball for 2008, no one relished as much success in the SHL as the Eastern Lady Warriors. The Lady Warriors cruised through the SHL to finish with a 13-0 record, becoming the 2008 SHL Division I Champions, their fifth league title in six years. Eastern varsity softball coach Eric Purdy earned the title as the 2008 SHL Softball Coach of the Year, and three Lady Warriors were named to the SHL All-League Team. Eastern softball players who were named SHL all-stars for 2008 were seniors Lauren Clifton, Johnna Johnson and Kelly Kratzer. While the Lady Warriors topped the competition in the SHL, there were two other exceptional student/athletes from Brown County teams who earned a spot on this year’s SHL All-League Softball Team. They were senior catcher Courtney Adams, of Fayetteville-Perry High School and senior first baseman Kylie Wright of Ripley-Union-Lewis-Huntington High School.
