LEES CREEK — Unable to hold a second half lead, the East Clinton girls basketball team dropped a 50-46 decision to Goshen in a Southern Buckeye Conference contest Saturday night. Hilarie Noes had 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Lady Astros. She made five of six free throws in the game. Tessa Witkemper had 11 points, two assists, two blocked shots and committed just two turnovers from her point guard position. EC head coach Tracy Fliehman said Jordan Finley was a bright spot with her defensive play, a three-pointer in the third period and only two turnovers.
East Clinton committed 20 turnovers and made just 16 of 54 field goal attempts. “We are not playing very smart basketball right now and we continue to beat ourselves, which is very frustrating,” Fliehman said. The game was close throughout, Fliehman said, with Goshen leading 8-4 early. At halftime, Goshen led 20-14. In the third period, East Clinton came out in a 1-2-2 zone and outscored Goshen 17-8 to take a 31-28 lead after three. After extending the lead to five in the fourth quarter, Fliehman said his team went five straight possessions with turnovers “which allowed Goshen to climb back into the game.” With opportunities late in the game to tie or take the lead, “we continued to turn the ball over,” Fliehman said. Goshen’s aggressive play at the offensive end allowed the Lady Warriors to go 19 of 28 from the free throw line, Fliehman said. East Clinton was 9 for 12 at the line.
