WAPAKONETA – The Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays (11-2) and the Sidney Lehman Catholic Cavaliers (11-1) will do battle Friday night (7:30 p.m.) at Wapakoneta’s Harmon Field in a Division VI state semifinal contest with the winner gaining a berth in the state finals at Massillon. Both teams match explosive offenses: the Jays average 26.1 points, 217.6 yards rushing and 79.5 passing (6.1 yards per play), while the Cavaliers put up 300.5 yards on the ground (6.8 yards per play), 72.7 via the air and 32.5 markers per. Leading the Jays’ offense are: sophomore tailback Jordan Leininger (164 rushes, 1,076 yards, 10 TDs; 14 grabs, 191 yards, 3 TDs; 28.2 yards per kick return), junior signal-caller Wes Ulm (146 for 788, 8 scores; 64-of-145 passing, 1,033 yards, 14 tallies, 6 picks), backup sophomore tailback Evan Burgei (66 totes, 480 yards, 8 scores; 20 yards per kick return), senior fullback Matt Brinkman (68 for 421, 5 tallies) and senior wideouts Adam Warnecke (13 receptions, 133 yards) and Jay Leininger (10 for 203, 2 tallies; 19.3 yards per punt return). Offensive lineman Alex Recker and fellow sophomore Joey Grubenhoff (10 pancake blocks each) lead up front. Blue Jay special teams are led by: Jordan Rode (5-of-6 field goals, 40-of-45 extra points) and Alex Recker (34.1 yards per punt on 19 attempts). The defenses also match up well, with the Blue and Gold giving up only 17.9 points, 146.8 yards rushing and 124.1 passing per game (4.8 ypp), while Lehman yields 9.5. Leading the Blue Jays’ defense are sophomore middle linebacker Chris Pohlman (78 solos, 62 assists), junior outside ’backer Joel Pohlman (64 and 47), sophomore cornerback A.J. Klausing (52 and 29; 5 picks), sophomore end Derek Klaus (45 and 32; 5 sacks), senior end Tyler Hayson (36 and 32; 6 sacks) and sophomores in safety Tyler Bergfeld (39 and 18; 5 interceptions) and linebacker Dylan Dancer (24 and 33).
