Blue Jays overcome odds, win 5th state football title

MASSILLON -- Delphos St. John's proved the doubters wrong once again Friday morning, as the Blue Jays flew past the heavily-favored Hopewell-Louden Chieftains with a 34-14 pounding to capture the Division VI 2008 State Championship Trophy on the gridiron. The win was St. John's fifth state title in football since 1998. The Blue Jays shocked the Chieftains with a quick first quarter score to go in front 7-0. Hopewell-Louden responded though with two quick scores on their next two possessions to retake the lead at 14-7. The Blue Jays' defense then made the necessary adjustments though, shutting the Chieftains high-powered offense down the rest of the way, while posting 28 unanswered points offensively. Quarterback Wes Ulm led the offensive charge for St. John's, running the option to perfection in rushing for 198 yards on 24 totes and a score. Ulm also passed for two TD's in the big win. While Ulm and the rest of the Blue Jay offense was tacking on points, the Jays' defense came up big by causing three turnovers, two interceptions and a fumble recovery. Overall, Delphos St. John's ouplayed their counterparts from Hopewell-Louden, recording 17 first downs to 13 for the Chieftains and rushing for 299 yards to a mere 56 yards from the Chieftains. While Hopewell-Louden outagined the Blue Jays via the airwaves (182-90), St. John's held the Chieftains well below their season and game averages. The Blue Jays end the 2008 season at 13-2, while Hopewell-Louden bows out at 14-1.
