MASSILLON -- Hopewell-Loudon’s unbeaten Chieftains (14-0) vie for their first Division VI state championship 11 a.m. Friday against 12-2 Delphos St. John’s at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium in Massillon.
The Chieftains, who swept the Midland Athletic League with a 9-0 mark, are in their second straight title game, losing to Newark Catholic last season. To say the Blue Jays have their hands full could be the understatement of the year. The Chieftains look to offensive leaders like Tyler Brown (237-of-328 passing — 72.3 completion percentage — for 3,349 yards, 42 TDs, 6 interceptions), Adam Brickner (81 grabs, 1,293 yards, 22 touchdowns; 5 rushing scores), running backs Aaron Kapelka (260 carries, 1,528 yards, 20 tallies) and Matt Brickner (104 carries, 406 yards; 22 catches, 307 yards, 8 total scores; 14 kick returns, 317 yards), Jay Yost (57 catches, 1,030 yards, 10 tallies; 64-of-67 extra points, 4-of-4 field goals) and Miles Chapman (51 for 426, 3 total scores). As a unit, the Chieftains average 40 points per game, running for 163.5 yards (5.01-yard average) and passing for 244.8 (14.01-yards per completion). The defense gives up 11.4 markers per outing. Hopewell-Loudon clobbered Malvern 55-20 in the state semifinals to meet up with the Blue Jays. The Blue and Gold eliminated H-L in 2005 on their way to their fourth state title.
