DELPHOS – Taylor Hesseling has been added to the 2009 Bluffton University football team by head coach Tyson Veidt. Hesseling, a 2009 Jefferson graduate, started playing football in his eighth-grade year at Jefferson. He played mostly defensive tackle at Jefferson but will be switched to the offensive line. He chose Bluffton over Hanover College (Madison, Ind.) not only for the gridiron program but the college’s academic programs: he intends on double-majoring in history and religion. His other activities will include Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), Brothers and Sisters In Christ (BASIC), Habitat for Humanity and Drama. He is the son of Greg and Brenda Hesseling and grandson of Rita C. Clapp and Margaret (Peggy) Long, as well as the late Ervin Hesseling and Donald Long.
Jefferson will hold the Athletes and Parents Meeting to comply with the Ohio High School Athletic Association requirement at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Jefferson Middle School Auditorium. All athletes and parents of Jefferson in grades 7–12 should plan to attend this meeting. OHSAA information and a brief presentation of athletic information will be presented, followed by individual sport meetings for the 2009 fall sports season. Any questions can be directed to Athletic Director David Hoffman at (419) 695-1786, extension 203; or via e-mail at

DELPHOS -- Work to move the football field at Stadium Park is underway. The sod has been moved to the baseball diamond north of the field and workers are now laying the new drainage system. The project will be tackled in three phases: Phase I includes moving the existing football playing field approximately 10 feet north to allow more space for handicapped accessibility and more generous sidelines. Drainage and irrigation systems will be installed and new sod will be laid over a sand base as the field is recrowned. More than 1,000 tons of sand will be brought in and mixed with existing topsoil for the project. In addition, artificial grass will be installed on both sidelines to prevent deterioration where teams stand during games. Phase I will cost $300,000. Donations of all types are welcome.
