WOOSTER - Crestview Alumnus Mark Miller capped his record-setting season as The College of Wooster's relief specialist by being named a third-team All-American by D3baseball.com.
Miller, a sophomore right-hander, broke Wooster and North Coast Athletic Conference records for saves with 13 in 16 such opportunities this spring. His 13 saves also ranked him third in the nation in NCAA Division III. During 26 appearances, another school record, Miller issued just eight walks and only three of the 41 hits he yielded went for extra bases (all doubles). He accumulated a 5-1 record with a team-low 1.97 ERA and 42 strikeouts over 45.1 innings pitched.
Through his first 13 appearances, Miller was a remarkable 3-0 with 10 saves and a 0.40 ERA. He closed the 2008 season with arguably his top performance, allowing just one earned run while toeing the mound for the final 6.1 innings of the Fighting Scots' 13-inning, 11-8 win over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional May 16. The 6.1 innings pitched in that game marked a career-high.
As Wooster's closer the past two years, Miller has gone 8-3 while converting 21 of 25 save opportunities and posting a 1.75 ERA. The 21 saves already mark a career record for the Scots. He has averaged nearly a strikeout per inning, setting down 83 over 87.2 innings, compared to 21 walks during that stretch.
Miller was one of the key players to the Scots' 36-11 season, which included finishing first in the North Coast Athletic Conference's East Division (14-2) and placing third at the NCAA regional tourney.
