At second doubles, Wilmington’s Megan Hayslip and Lindsay Brickles beat Emily Nunn and Brandie Thompson 6-1, 6-1. “This was a good opening match for us. Wilmington is always so tough just because they play so well and they are so well coached. I thought we competed and challenged a lot of their points and it is by far the best we’ve done against them over the past few years. I was really glad to see our first doubles team of Ashley and Jamie start out with a win. We will count on them for a lot of wins this year,” said EC head coach Tom Kitchen. Wilmington will host Miami Trace today at 10 a.m. The Lady Astros return to action Aug. 13 at home against Hillsboro. SUMMARY SINGLES Marci Sodini (W) defeated Amber Boris (EC) 6-1, 6-1. LEES CREEK — The Wilmington High School junior varsity tennis team defeated East Clinton 4-1 on Monday to open the season. WHS swept singles play, and won the first doubles match. EC’s lone win came at second doubles. “I was very pleased with all our players as this was our first match of the season. Several players were first time players on the team and played with confidence. It was a beautiful day to play tennis and both teams were polite and friendly with one another,” said WHS coach Cathy Fay. WHS is now 1-0, while EC is 0-1. “We have a lot of kids playing tennis for the first time so this was good to get a match in for them early so they could get some of the jitters out.
