By SHAWN ROBINSON Sports Writer BLANCHESTER — It was a Cider Keg game for the ages. Clinton-Massie pounded Blanchester 49-0 at Barbour Memorial Field Friday in the season-opener for both teams.
Massie set series records for most points scored in a game by one team and largest margin of victory. “Obviously, when you score 49 unanswered in a Keg Game at Blanchester, you have to feel good about it,” Falcons head coach Dan McSurley said. The previous largest margin of victory was 44-0 by Blanchester in 1999. Those 44 points were the most scored by one team in a Cider Keg game until Friday. Massie now has won five straight regular-season meetings against Blanchester. The Falcons used a 28-point second quarter to take a 35-0 halftime lead. Three of Massie’s four second-quarter touchdowns came after Wildcat turnovers. The other came after Massie forced a Blanchester a four-and-out drive. Two of the touchdowns came on Massie one-play drives. Massie’s other two scores in the game came on its first two drives of the second half. “We knew Clinton-Massie was a good football team,” Blanchester head coach John Lovin said. “We can’t make mental mistakes and turn the ball over and we did. The bottom line is that you have to hold on to the football against a good team or it’s going to kill you.” Lovin didn’t offer any comment when asked whether an alleged pre-season practice hazing incident, which has been reported in the News Journal, was a distraction to his team. Blanchester did penetrate the Falcon’s red zone four times, including twice in the game’s final seven minutes. Wildcat turnovers squashed three scoring opportunities. Massie defensive lineman Justin Straight stonewalled Matt Younker on 4th-and-3 at the Falcon 11 with 1:56 left in the game to preserve the shutout. Logan McCormick, in his first start as Massie’s quarterback, completed one pass in four chances. It was a 20-yard touchdown strike to Coty Burton. McCormick also rushed five times for 54 yards and a touchdown. “Our passing game was sputtering. We have to be more productive out of our passing game,” McSurley said. “But, I’m pleased with our option. When you have a quarterback who can read that, it’s beautiful.” Defensively, McSurley said he’s looking for his sophomores to step up a bit more. Sophomore running back Coy Burroughs and senior kick return man Thomas Bare were bright spots for Blanchester on an otherwise dismal evening. Burroughs carried the ball 27 times for 155 yards, unofficially. Bare’s feet returned six kicks for 167 yards, unofficially.
