WHS boys soccer falls 2-0
WILMINGTON — The Wilmington High School boys soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to West Carrollton in non-league action this week. WHS is now “We just did not come out in the first half ready to play. We were a step slower than West Carrolton,” said WHS head coach Jeff Wiederhold. The teams were evenly matched until West Carrollton’s center forward struck a ball from 35 yards out and it just alluded the outstretched hands of keeper Timmy Wiederhold. About 10 minutes later, WC netted its second goal to take the 2-0 lead. “We tried to redirect and refocus the team at half time. We played much better in the second half. We were unable to find the back of the net. We had our chances,” said Wiederhold. WHS returns to action Tuesday at Waynesville. In JV action, WHS tied West Carrollton 2-2. Blan tennis falls in battle BETHEL — The Blanchester High School tennis team fell 3-2 to Bethel-Tate in Southern Buckeye Conference action on Tuesday. It was the first loss for the Lady Wildcats as the team is now 4-1 on the season and 3-1 in teh SBC. BT improves to 4-2 on the season and 4-1 in the league. For BHS, Katie Fawley and Lindsay Martin picked up singles games wins. Fawley battled in a long 7-6 (7-3), 1-6, 6-3 match. “Obviously anytime you end up on the wrong end of the score it is disappointing, but this was more disappointing for the things my girls had to deal with that they shouldn’t have. It is tough to overcome unsportsmanlike behavior and rules violations to come out on top. I was very pleased with the poise and class my girls and their parents showed in this difficult environment. It was a very unfortunate and I am very disappointed they had to go through it. I hate to even bring up the negatives, especially in a loss because it sounds like sour grapes. Bethel played better than us and deserved to win. It was just unfortunate how it went down. I was very pleased with the way Katie and Lindsay played. Massie soccer pummels McClain GREENFIELD — The Clinton-Massie High School girls soccer team picked up a big 13-0 win over McClain in South Central Ohio League action on Tuesday. Massie is now 1-3 on the season. The Lady Falcons were balanced scoring. Shelby Goodin netted two with an assist from Katie Heyob; Mariah Rhoads scored two with an assist from Heyob; Brooke Lamb scored two unassisted; Caitlin Medley scored one assisted by Brittany Santoro; Heyob scored two with assists from Rhoads and Medley; Aubrey Johnson scored unassisted; Melissa Collins scored unassisted; Ashley Carruthers scored one off a Collins assist; and Cara Brooker netted one goal off a Sam Steele assist. Molly Fassig and Heather Gray split time in the net for the shutout. “Massie moved the ball well, passing to feet and stepping to the ball quickly,” said CM assistant coach Carol Foell. Blan boys soccer now 3-0 BLANCHESTER — The Blanchester High School boys soccer team opened Southern Buckeye Conference action on Tuesday with a 6-0 win over Felicity. BHS is now 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in league play. Wildcat goals came from junior captain Bryson Lewis headed in a cross from junior Dillon Swinderman. Lewis went on to score two more goals in the first half. Also for BHS, senior captain Kyle Hamilton netted a goal and picked up an assist, while senior Ryan Braley and freshman Jake Parker scored their first goals of the season. Junior Josh Richmond also picked up an assist. “Our offense is doing an amazing job this year and need to be given a lot of credit, but our defense has really stepped up and come through in some tight situations,” said BHS head coach Troy Ballinger. Goalkeeper Randall Davidson earned his first shutout with eight saves on the night. The boys will play defending league champions, the Batavia Bulldogs, this Thursday night. “I have high expectations for our match against Batavia. I think we will surprise a lot of people this year,” said the coach. ’Cat golf still unbeaten GOSHEN — The Blanchester High School golf team remains undefeated in dual and tri-matches on the season improving to 6-0 after a win over Goshen. The Wildcats shot a 161 at Goshen’s home course of Deer Track, while the Warriors carded a 191. The course is a par 36 layout. For the Wildcats, Michael Ledford won match medalist honors with an even par 36. Also for the Wildcats, Travis Jackson shot a career low 37, Brian Keith shot a 43 and Tyler Jackson shot a 45. Playing but not scoring for BHS were Kaitie Long with a 46 and Nathan Moore with a 48. For Goshen, Aaron Rogers shot a 46, Coty McClanahan shot a 47, Kurt Dwyer shot a 47 and Jordan Poff shot a 51. “Overall, this was a good match for us and a step in the right direction,” said BHS head coach Jason Gray. “We were able to post a solid team score in a road match which is a good sign for us entering the league matches. Freshmen Michael Ledford and Travis Jackson both had solid rounds.” WHS girls golf wins again GREEN TOWNSHIP — The Wilmington High School girls golf team defeated Loveland at the Snow Hill County Club on Wednesday. WHS shot a 195 to Loveland’s 228. Wilmington’s Amanda Middleton was match medalist with a 45, followed by Lyz Cox with a 48, Samantha Stewart with a 51 and Gabby Brown with a 51. Playing but not scoring was Tori Crowe with a 61. For Loveland, Julie Griffin shot a 54, Natalie Brosz shot a 55, Elizabeth Orsinell shot a 58 and Natalie Siddique shot a 61. Wilmington is now 13-1 on the season. “It certainly wasn’t the most ideal condition to play golf in, but I am extremely pleased wiht our overall team performance. The almost constant drizzle was a good test for this team to see how we could adjust to the change in course conditions and the weather,” said WHS head coach Kathy Collins. “Amanda, Lyz, Samantha and Gabby stayed very close to their season averages. It’s a good sign of maturity when we can take the elements out of it and stay focused on what we need to achieve. Tori had ber very best round of the season. We tweaked her swing a little prior to the match and it proved to be pretty successful for her.” Non-varsity Massie JV wins in SCOL The Clinton-Massie High School junior varsity volleyball team defeated McClain in South Central Ohio League action on Tuesday. CM lost the first game 26-24, then came back to win the match 25-19 and 25-18. EC JV downs G-town The East Clinton High School junior varsity volleyball team defeated Georgetown in Southern Buckeye Conference action on Tuesday. Ec won 25-23 and 25-19. In the first game, Tiffany Luttrell had seven points while Chelsea Hilterbrandt had eight. In the second game, Hannah Hazelbaker led the team with 12 points — seven of which were aces. “Both Jordanne Gambill and Tiffany Luttrell hit the ball very well. The girls were really together as a team,” said EC coach Lynn Cowman. WHS JV splits matches The Wilmington High School junior varsity tennis team fell 5-0 to Talawanda on Wednesday. WHS is now 5-2 on the season and 1-1 in the Fort Ancient Valley Conference. “Our players played well and the games were closer than the scores indicated. There were several games that went to deuce several times within the game, but we were not always able to win the game,” said WHS coach Cathy Fay. “AshleyRings had a hard fought match at second singles going three sets.” On Tuesday, the team defeated Amelia in a close match. Rings fought in a long three-set tie-breaker. “It was a good match to watch except Ashley lost,” said Fay. “Laura Rivers was down the first set, but made a great comeback to a tie-breaker and went on to win the next set as well. She really hung in there and fought her way back to victory. I was proud of all our girls playing as they all gave a lot of effort.” SUMMARY WHS VS. TALAWANDA SINGLES Laura Miller lost to N.
