By BILL LIERMANN Sports Writer ADAMS TOWNSHIP — Clinton-Massie prevailed over county rival East Clinton Friday night, 28-0, at rain-soaked Frank Irelan Field.
For much of the first half, it was a hard-hitting contest between the two teams as they matched defensive efforts with the Falcons taking a 7-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. East Clinton proved to be its own worst enemy as a pair of miscues in the second half created the difference. The Falcons seized the opportunity to convert a pair of Astro-turnovers into touchdowns. East Clinton head coach Matt Hodge pointed to those crucial turnovers as the turning point of the contest. “We made those crucial mistakes and they (Massie) capitalized. You really can’t fault the kids though because they gave a great effort out there tonight. We just could not make plays when we had to,” Hodge said. With the loss, the Astros fall to 1-2 on the season. Victorious Falcon head coach Dan McSurley praised the Astros for their effort, and despite the win, said he feels his team has to do a better job with its passing game. “I’ve got a lot of respect for East Clinton. There’s no reason they can’t be a factor in their league this year. They really competed with us tonight and it was a real physical, hard-hitting type of game. We have got to get our passing game back in sync. We were able to capitalize when they (East Clinton) made mistakes, but our execution has to get much better,” said McSurley. After playing a scoreless first quarter, the Falcons struck on the opening play of the second quarter as quarterback Logan McCormick hooked up with Tyler Davis on a 65-yard pass reception. Geremie Dart connected on the PAT making it a 7-0 Massie lead. The Falcons’ second touchdown of the night came after East Clinton’s special teams miscue on a punt attempt by Mike Seitz. He was not able to field the snap properly, and was downed at the 16-yard line. Jordon Scanlon took it in on the next play with 6:05 remaining in the third quarter. Dart’s PAT kick extended the Falcons’ lead to 14-0. Sophomore running back Scott Wilkie accounted for Massie’s final pair of touchdowns, both coming in the final quarter of play. The first was a 13 yard run with 8:20 remaining, followed by a 71-yard scamper down the sideline with 6:50 remaining. Again, Dart was successful on both of the PAT attempts, to round out the scoring. McSurley was glad to get some game experience for his squad, which includes several sophomores and juniors. “We’ve got a lot of young kids playing for us right now, and this kind of game was a good exercise for them. These kids are showing a lot of maturity and we’re gonna move into league play next week, against Hillsboro,” he said.
