By RUSTY MILLER, AP Sports Writer After a four-year wait, Elder finally has bragging rights over St. X in Cincinnati. Elder beat St. Xavier 33-15 before a sellout crowd of 10,000 at Elder’s Pit last week — Elder’s first win in the series since 2003.
“People here have been waiting for this for five years,” Elder coach Doug Ramsey said. “To break their streak here, that’s a big deal.” St. X (3-3) had been 12-0 in Greater Catholic League South games the past four years under coach Steve Specht, with two D-I state titles along the way. “I didn’t do a very good job this week,” Specht said. “We weren’t ready, and that’s on me.” Mark Miller was 14-for-19 passing for 187 yards and two TDs for the Bombers (5-1). BULLETIN-BOARD MATERIAL: Wyoming and Middletown each recently won their 600th games; with a 62-7 drubbing of Norwalk, Ed Nasonti passed his own former mentor, Lowell Schaffer, to became Bellevue’s winningest coach with his 145th victory; Columbiana Crestview’s Cameron Reynolds’ 31-yard field goal as time expired handed South Range its first Inter Tri-County League loss since the league formed prior to the 2006 season; Victor Fortkamp booted a 74-yard punt against Anna on Friday, breaking the oldest record in St. Henry’s football history; Coldwater’s Mario de la Rosa booted a 47-yard field goal to break the school record in the Cavaliers’ 51-6 win over Rockford Parkway; Findlay’s Joey Powell set up one touchdown with a blocked punt and another with an interception in a 45-0 win over Marion Harding; and Zach Van Wey returned a fumble 94 yards for a TD and teammate Haven Holdcroft ran another fumble back 65 yards for a score but New Concord John Glenn still lost 28-24 to unbeaten Thornville Sheridan. RUSH TO DAYLIGHT: Youngstown Liberty’s Fitzgerald Toussaint (who will play at Michigan next season) rushed 14 times for 282 yards and 5 TDs in a 35-0 win over Warren Champion, giving him 1,372 yards and 14 TDs; Ben Moody set school records with 341 rushing yards including a 91-yard TD run and tied a third with 5 TDs in Cortland Lakeview’s 42-7 win over Newton Falls; Ben Cline, converted to RB from TE in the offseason, ran for 321 yards and six TDs in Wooster Triway’s 52-7 win over Navarre Fairless; Brent Jackson of Vienna Mathews rushed for 322 yards on 28 carries and scored 4 TDs in a 40-14 win over Andover Pymatuning Valley; Southington Chalker’s Jimmy Rasey rushed 38 times for 335 yards and scored 6 TDs in a 54-34 win over Ashtabula Sts. Paul & John; top-ranked Cincinnati Colerain scored 28 unanswered points in the second half to beat Mason 48-27, with Tyler Williams rushing for 249 yards and three TDs on 18 carries; McDonald had four players rush for 100 yards in a 69-0 win over Sebring McKinley; Hicksville’s Logan Battershell has rushed for 5 TDs in each of the last two games; Justin Buenger of Hamler Patrick Henry rushed for 229 yards and 3 TDs in a 53-13 victory over Delta; Derrell McCaleb of Ashtabula Lakeside rushed for 260 yards on 24 carries and scored on runs of 27, 68 and 90 yards in a 26-7 victory over Painesville Riverside; and West Lafayette Ridgewood’s Jake Conrad took over for the injured Derrick Young and ran for 330 yards and six touchdowns in a 39-34 win over Sugarcreek Garaway (Garaway’s David Gerber passed for 365 yards and three TDs and ran for 2 more scores in a losing effort). ST. IGGY: Seven-time Associated Press state poll champion Cleveland St. Ignatius led 35-0 after one quarter and 49-0 at halftime on its way to a 49-7 win at Massillon Washington. Andrew Holland played just the opening two periods but completed 10-of-11 passes for 262 yards and three TDs. St. Ignatius outgained Massillon 373-22 in the first half. AIR RAIDERS: Bo Cordell threw for 312 yards and three TDs (18-of-20 passing) and ran for a TD as Cincinnati Indian Hill beat Mariemont 34-14; Cincinnati Princeton’s Spencer Ware was 25-of-45 passing for 321 yards and three TDs and also ran for a TD in a 28-21 win over Lakota West; Zach Toerner was 16-of-25 passing for 313 yards and three TDs and he rushed 14 times for 57 yards and three more TDs in Hamilton Badin’s 40-14 win over Purcell Marian; Kyle Cook threw for 330 yards and five TDs on 12-of-16 passing to lead Morrow Little Miami past Wilmington 64-27; Orrville’s Joey Besancon passed for 292 yards and four TDs and ran for another score in a 51-18 win over Mansfield Senior; Fostoria’s Micah Hyde accounted for 292 of Fostoria’s 303 total yards in a 35-6 win over Shelby, completing 13-of-17 passes for 208 yards, rushing for 84 yards and three TDs (3, 18, 6) on 21 carries and returning an interception 35 yards for a TD; and Jamie Campbell completed 22-of-30 passes for 404 yards and five TDs (11, 37, 69, 6, 45) and rushed for a 1-yard TD as Bucyrus rallied from a 17-0 first quarter deficit for a 41-29 win over Ontario; TURN THIS THING AROUND: With a 21-7 win over Willard, Galion (4-2) surpassed its win total for the past five years combined. The Tigers, who won a Division II state championship in 1985 under former Akron and current Ashland University head coach Lee Owens, were a combined 3-47 the past five years.
