BHS picks up 3-2 win over Felicity

BLANCHESTER — The Blanchester High School tennis team defeated Felicity 3-2 in Southern Buckeye Conference action on Monday.

BHS is now 6-10 on the season and 4-6 in the SBC.

For the Lady Wildcats, Katie Fawley picked up her first win in the first singles position. She defeated Courtney Wehrum 6-0, 6-0.

Also for BHS, Lindsay Martin picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win at second singles.

The first doubles team of Sarah Cioca and Karen Wilson picked up the third win, 6-0, 6-1, in the Lady Wildcat victory.

“This was another great effort out of our team. Katie and Lindsay continue to play well at first and second singles. Katie’s hard work was rewarded with a win. Sarah and Karen played a very strong match at first doubles,” said BHS head coach Matt Sexton.

The team returns to action 4 p.m. today when it hosts East Clinton.

The team will begin post-season play in the Division II Cincinnati sectional tournament at Seven Hills and Summit Country Day athletic facilities.

Fawley and Tabitha Kirby received byes in the first round of singles action. Fawley will then lay the winner of Wehrun and Kelcey Gallagher of Mariemont. Kirby will play the winner of Celia Lally of Goshen and Katie Shouse of Bethel-Tate.

In doubles play, Cioca and Martin will play Harker and Spriggs of McNicholas at first doubles. The second doubles of Wilson and Lendsey Smith will take on Tatman and White of Felicity.

“I fell like we came out of the draw pretty well. The seed in Sarah and Lindsay’s quarter is the first doubles team from New Richmond that they lost to in three sets earlier this year. I wanted to try to get them another crack at that team. They will have to beat two good teams to get to them, but if they do make it, they have a chance to get out to districts,” said Sexton.

No BHS girls doubles team has ever qualified for districts. The last BHS girls player to qualify was Andrea Gibson who now plays for Wilmington College.
