By SHAWN ROBINSON Sports Writer BLANCHESTER — Western Brown Bronco thoroughbreds Shawn Davis and Travis Taylor tore up a muddy track Friday at Blanchester’s Barbour Memorial Field. They combined for 489 of Western Brown’s 505 rushing yards and six touchdowns to give the Broncos a 39-14 Southern Buckeye Conference win.
Davis ran for 312 yards on 15 carries and scored on runs of 64, 70, 61 and 47 yards. Taylor had 177 yards on nine carries and touchdown gallops of 85 and 26 yards. They scored pretty much every way imaginable — untouched, running over Blanchester defenders, diving to the pylon and delivering stiff arms. “The kids played hard. But, we get tired, and mentally, we stop focusing. The end result is big plays,” Blanchester head coach John Lovin said. “We have to line up properly. And, if we don’t play sound football, it kills us.” Taylor and Davis scored on consecutive one-play drives to help put Western Brown (3-0, 2-0) up 14-0 after a quarter. Blanchester (0-3, 0-1) responded after Davis’ first romp with a four-play, 65-yard drive that ended with Coy Burroughs’ 57-yard touchdown run. That was Blanchester’s first touchdown of the season and the first touchdown Western Brown surrendered in eight quarters. The scored stayed that way until less than a minute before halftime when Josh Runyon hit a wide-open Rylan St. John with a perfect 36-yard strike to tie the game at 14. That play came one play after a Western Brown fumble. Davis’ 70-yard touchdown broke the tie at the 7:10 mark of the third period. After three turnovers, two by Blanchester and one by Western Brown, the Broncos tacked on another score. It was Taylor’s second touchdown, a 26-yarder which made it 27-14 with 9:27 to go in the contest. Five minutes later, Davis added his 61-yard touchdown run to make it 33-14. Davis’ last score, six seconds before the final gun, came from a run right up the gut when the Broncos could have very well taken a knee to finish the game.
