BLANCHESTER — The Blanchester High School girls basketball team used a strong full-court press and a 17-6 second quarter to defeat visiting Hillsboro, 60-31, on Thursday.
Blan’s Jenna Weisflock takes grabs a rebound Blanchester’s Julia Richardson drives against Hillsboro’s Brittany Burns. Blanchester’s Chelsea Wisniewski (21) and Ashley Watkins trap Hillsboro’s Amanda Price. Blanchester improves to 7-8 on the season while Hillsboro falls to 0-14. The teams traded points to open the game, but Blanchester put together a 14-3 run to finish the first quarter ahead 19-10. Two big three-point plays from Julia Richardson at the end of the first period sparked the Lady Wildcats into the second stanza. The BHS press proved too much for Hillsboro in the second quarter when Brittany Burns and Brittany Abbott were the only two Lady Indians to score. Blanchester had balanced scoring in the quarter from Heather Young, Julia Richardson, Becca Brooks, Ashley Watkins, Andrea Kuhnell, Jenna Weisflock and Chelsea Wisniewski. “Turnovers are still our enemy,” said HHS coach Bobbi Bloomfield. “We took twice as many shots in the second half as they did, we just couldn’t get them to fall.” The Lady Indians were forced to play the final three periods without starting senior Tasha Dance who left the game with an apparent knee injury. In the third quarter, both teams saw even scoring from their players with Blanchester taking the 46-23 lead into the final period. On the night, Blanchester out rebounded Hillsboro 42-27 led by Weisflock with eight boards. Blanchester’s Watkins led all scorers with 12 points after connecting on three from long range. Also for BHS, Young and Julia Richardson scored 10 points each. “We came out and did a good job being ready from the start. We got some easy buckets from the press,” said BHS head coach Jason Gray. “We knew we weren’t going to be able to play them half court because of their size, so we had to speed up the play of the game. We were outsized in about every position. “Our girls did a good job of sharing… driving to the hoop and passing back out to get better looks and shots. The girls put forth a good effort. We did a great job being aggressive and not letting ourselves get pushed around.” HIllsboro was led in scoring by Burns with six points, followed by Dance, Lauren Gunderman, Jasmine Cumberland and Kelsey Juillerat with five points each. “Jasmine Cumberland stepped in when we needed her to and got some points and pulled down some rebounds,” said Bloomfield. Hillsboro is back on the road today at London in South Central Ohio League play. The Lady Wildcats return to action 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Felicity in Southern Buckeye Conference action. BHS is 5-5 in the league.
