BLANCHESTER — The Blanchester High School girls basketball team picked up a close 47-46 win over New Richmond in Southern Buckeye Conference action on Friday.

Blanchester is now 5-7 on the season and 5-4 in the SBC. New Richmond falls to 4-9 on the season and 3-5 in league play.

“It was great to get our second win in a row and I was pleased with how we handled the last 3 minutes of a close game. We were able to get some key stops defensively and convert offensively both in the half court and at the free throw line. We have not been in that situation in a game very often this season and the girls listened well in timeouts and maintained their composure and we were able to pull out the win,” said BHS head coach Jason Gray.

The teams were tied 16-16 after the first quarter, and NRHS held a 28-27 lead at the intermission.

“In the second quarter we switched to playing mostly zone defense and were able to build a nine-point lead with about 3 minutes left in the half. New Richmond then went on a 10-0 run to close out the half. We let up when we got the lead and committed some silly turnovers, and gave up fove offensive rebounds that keyed their run,” said Gray. “The rest of the game was very close with the lead changing hands several times. We took the lead for good with less than 2 minutes left on a Jenna Weisflock basket with an assist from Heather Young that gave us a 44-43 lead. We did a nice job defensively the last two minutes not allowing their two leading scorers to get any looks at the basket and getting the defensive rebounds that we needed to. Heather Young was fouled and hit 1 of 2 free throws to give us a 45 to 43 lead, then Chelsea Wisniewski got a defensive rebound and was fouled on New Richmond’s next possesion and hit both of her free throws with 7 seconds left in the game to give us a 47 to 43 lead. New Richmond hit a three pointer as time expired to make the final score 47 to 46.”

Wisniewski led the Lady Wildcats with 12 points, followed by Weisflock with 11. Weisflock also pulled down 15 rebounds. Wisniewski had three assists, and Jennifer Rineair had nine rebounds.

Blanchester returns to action Thursday at Western Brown.
