BLANCHESTER — The Blanchester High School girls basketball team opened 2008 with a 44-43 win over Bethel-Tate in Southern Buckeye Conference action on Thursday.

Blanchester is now 4-7 on the season and 4-4 in league play. Bethel-Tate falls to 5-6 on the season and 3-4 in the SBC.

The teams were tied after the first quarter, 9-9, and BT held a 22-21 lead at the intermission. Blanchester came out in the third quarter and outscored BT 14-6 to take the lead and held on through the finish.

“We came out and played well and had good intensity to start the ballgame. We were ready to play and had good defensive intensity. The first half was well played by both teams. In the third quarter, we came out and did a great job of executing offensively. We passed well and moved against their zone well,” said BHS head coach Jason Gray. “When it came down to crunch time, we took care of th eball and made a good defensive stop to get the win.”

BHS was led by Jenna Weisflock with eight points, followed by Tori Richardson and Heather Young with seven points each.

“This is the most balanced scoring we have had all year. Everybody scored when they had the opportunity and passed when the other girls had the opportunities. It was a great team effort defensively and offensively,” said the coach.

Blanchester will return to action 7:30 p.m. Saturday at home against New Richmond.
