LEESBURG — The Miami Trace Lady Panther softball team posted a 13-2 non-league win at Leesburg Fairfield over the Lady Lions.

“This may very well have been our most complete ball game of the season,” Miami Trace head coach Terry Smith said. “Fairfield’s a very good team. They won the small school division of (the Southern Hills League) and we gave them just four hits and two runs tonight. And our defense behind Kayce (Elzey) was solid. We made the plays.”

Fairfield was coming off a 14-2 win over Fayetteville that clinched the SHL title, the 13th in the program’s history.

Elzey pitched seven innings to earn the victory for Miami Trace. She allowed two runs (both earned) on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Devan Bernard took the loss for Fairfield. She pitched 6 2/3 innings with no walks and seven strikeouts.

Miami Trace had offensive production from vertually everyone on the team Tuesday. Ten of 12 batters who went to the plate had at least one hit.

Andi Strahler went 3 for 5 with two runs scored for the Panthers.

Jennifer Carr was 3 for 5 with three doubles and three RBI.

Breanne Johnson had a double and Elzey hit a double.

Cara Vergamini had three runs and two RBI; Megan Moore scored two runs and Nancy Coulter had two RBI.

It was senior night for Fairfield’s Gabby Holden and Samantha Collier.

In the top of the first for Miami Trace, Taylor Stockwell and Strahler each had a single to left field.

Carr then followed with the first of her three doubles on the night, hitting the outfield fence on the fly for two RBI.

In the bottom of the second, Kelsey Green hit a double and moved to third on a ground out.

Emily Smith then bunted and was thrown out at first. Green made it safely home on a close play at the plate.

In the bottom of the third, Collier singled and was sacrificed to second and went to third on a single by Penny Holden.

With Collier at third, Abby Thackston bunted with a similar result to what happened in the second inning, with the out at first and the close, but safe play at home.

Miami Trace took a 4-2 lead in the top of the fourth.

Carr led off with a single and, with Vergamini in to pinch-run, Priscilla Strayer bunted, moving Vergamini to third.

Elzey was hit by a pitch, with Moore on to run for her.

Moore stole second and Coulter’s ground out scored Strayer.

Olivia Mick then delivered a two-out single, scoring Moore to make it 4-2, Panthers.

Miami Trace added four more runs in the fifth.

Stockwell reached on an error and Strahler singled. An error put runners at second and third.

Carr hit her second double, scoring Stockwell. Strayer singled, scoring Strahler and with one out Coulter singled to left, scoring Vergamini.

Strayer soon came in to score on a wild pitch to make it 8-2, Panthers.

In the top of the seventh, the Panthers completed the scoring with five runs.

Elzey hit a double to the base of the fence. Moore came in as the courtesy runner.

With two away, Johnson hit a double off the fence in left-centerfield, scoring Moore.

Mick walked and Vergamini singled, scoring Johnson and Mick.

Tracy Bryan singled and Strahler singled, scoring Vergamini.

An error on the play allowed Bryan to score to make it 13-2.

Fine defensive plays were turned in by Lindy Berry and Strahler, according to Smith.

Fairfield, now 11-4 overall (10-3 SHL) will host Cedarville today.

Miami Trace, 15-5 and hoping to equal the school record of 18 wins, has another solid challenge ahead when they travel to Teays Valley Friday at 5 p.m.
