The Miami Valley Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association recently announced its postseason awards for both boys and girls, and two local players led the long list of honorees by being named All-Ohio. Sidney goalie Molly Schriber was named to the Division I All-Ohio Team and Lehman forward Maggie Franklin to the D-II team. Schriber led the entire Miami Valley in saves this season with 194. Franklin had 15 goals for the Lady Cavs and led the team with 11 assists.
Both were also named to the All-District teams, along with Sidney junior midfielder Evan Schlagetter in Division I, and Lehman’s junior midfielder Wade Schroeder in Division III. Meanwhile, there were four Sidney boys named to the Division I All-Area North team, including Schlagetter to the first team, sophomore midfielder Evan Rees to the second team, and junior defender Chris Gaier and senior defender Jarrod Woodbury to the third team. In Division III boys, five players from Botkins were named to the All-Area East team, including junior midfielder Kurt Egbert to the first team, senior goalie Alex Hemmert to the second team, and defenders Justin Russell and Nicholas Hoelscher, and midfielder Tyler Schmerge, all seniors, to the third team. Lehman, meanwhile, had six players named to the All-Area West team. Schroeder and senior goaie Dan Westerheide were first-team selections, senior forward Mike McMahon and senior defender Aaron Sprague were named to the second team, and senior defender Adam Cavinder and senior midfielder Aaron Stevenson to the third team. In addition, Lehman head coach Tony Schroeder was named the Parochial Coach of the Year. Sidney also had four girls named to the All-Area North team, led by sophomore forward Brittney Koester on the first team. Junior forward Tarah Heath was named to the second team, and senior midfielder Marissa Clark and senior defender Stephanie Schloss were named to the third team. The Division III All-Area North team was dominated by local/county players. Named to the first team was Lehman’s Franklin, leading scorer Gretchen Walter, a sophomore midfielder, and Anna goalie Whitney Zumberger. Named to the second team were Anna senior midfielder Stacy Dodd, Lehman junior midfielder Brittany McDonagh and Botkins senior defender Leah Schmerge. Named to the third team were Anna senior defender Amy Finkenbine, Anna junior midfielder Nicole Schmidt, Anna senior defender Heather Deiters, Anna sophomore midfielder Dominique Stewart, Botkins sophomore forward Brooke McGowan, Lehman sophomore defender Chris tine Freytag, Lehman senior defender Ashley Markowitz, and Lehman senior midfielder Traci Watercutter. In addition, both Lehman coaches received recognition. Head coach Bill Ramey was named the Parochial Coach of the Year, and his assistant, Mark Vondenheuval, was named the Assistant Coach of the Year. Many of the honorees played in the Senior All-Star Game Saturday at Northmont. Woodbury of Sidney played in the D-I game, while Hemmert, Hoelscher, Russell and Schmerge of Botkins played for the D-III East, and Westerheide, McMahon, Sprague, Cavinder and Stevenson for the West. For the girls, Clark, Schriber and Schloss of Sidney played for the D-I North team, Franklin, Markowitz and Watercutter of Lehman, Zumberger, Finkenbine, Deiters and Dodd of Anna, and Schmerge of Botkins played for the D-II North team.
