Lehman and Anna battled to a 3-3 tie in high school girls soccer action between two of the top small-school teams in the area.

The verdict left Lehman at 11-2-2 and the Lady Rockets 12-3-1.

Anna forced Lehman to battle from behind after scoring all three of its goals in the first half and leading 3-1 at the break.

The first goal came just five minutes into the game when Megan Clark scored for the Lady Rockets. Eight minutes later, Kyleigh Overbey scored to make it 2-0.

Lehman cut the lead in half with a goal from Maggie Franklin with 7:33 remaining, but Anna answered with a goal from Erica Schrage with 3:30 remaining, the assist coming from Overbey.

The Lady Cavs responded in the second half, howeve.

With 12:17 remaining in the game, Lehman was awarded a penalty kick and Makenzie Franklin converted to make it 3-2.

Then with 6:40 remaining, Kalli Holland scored inside the far post to knot the game and conclude the scoring.

Both teams have now concluded regular-seasonplay and will open Division II tournament play on Monday.

Lehman, seeded third, will host Miami East and Anna, seeded No. 5, will be at home against Urbana.

LHS boys win

in final seconds

Lehman’s boys soccer game against Miami Valley came down to the final second, when Aaron Stevenson’s shot crossed the goal at the same time the siren went off to give the Cavaliers a 2-1 thriller over Miami Valley Thursday at Lehman.

The win puts Lehman at 12-3-1 at the end of the regular season, and the Cavs are off until a week from Saturday when they host a tournament game against either National Trail or TV South.

“I knew this would be a good game,” said Lehman coach Tony Schroeder.

Lehman led 1-0 at the half, scoring with just 1:10 to go before intermission. Schroeder decided with two minutes remaining to bring up sweeper Aaron Sprague, and it proved to be a wise decision. He took a cross from Adam Freytag, and chested the ball in for the goal.

“We brought him up at the end of our last game, and he brings a lot of energy,” said Schroeder. “So we decided to do it again.”

Miami Valley scored with 22 minutes remaining in the second period, and it stayed that way until the very end.

With only about 15 seconds left, Mike McMahon got fouled about 19 yards out, then a Miami Valley player got a yellow card for delaying the game, stopping the clock.

Bryan McDonagh took the free kick, and the Cavs got another shot when the ball bounced off a MV defender. After that shot deflected off a defender, Stevenson was there to put it in as the siren sounded.

The referees had to congregate to decide whether the ball crossed the goal in time, and determined it had.

“It was so quick,” said Schroeder. “One referee said he heard the whistle (signalling the goal) and the siren at the same time.”

Dan Westerheide had six saves for the Cavs, who outshot Miami Valley 13-9.

Jackets edged 3-2

Sidney High’s boys team battled hard with Chaminade in action at the high school Thursday, with Chaminade pulling out a 3-2 victory with the lone goal of the second half.

The loss ends Sidney’s regular season with an 8-7-1 record, and the Jackets will be back in action Tuesday at the high school against Trotwood in tournament play.

Chaminade is 5-7-3.

“It was a hard, physical battle with many controversial calls,” said Sidney head coach Eric Harlamert. “We knew they were a good team. They’re ranked third in Division II in the Miami Valley. And they came out very physical. Both teams had opportunities.”

Jared Woodbury got Sidney on the board quickly, scoring with 37:52 left in the first period off an assist from Andy Beigel. Woodbury’s shot glanced off a Chaminade defender and into the goal.

Chaminade was awarded a penalty kick and converted with 27:48 left to tie the score, then took the lead 10 minutes later.

But Sidney tied the game with 2:42 left in the first half when Chris Gaier’s floater from about 50 yards out went over the goalie’s head and into the net.

However, Chaminade got the game-winner with 27:36 remaining in the game.

The junior varsity won 4-3 over Chaminade thanks to the play of Chris Farrell and Adam Boyd.

Farrell had three goals and an assist, and Boyd had the other goal and added two assists.
