Anna golf coach Tom Kremer wishes there was a way to settle once and for all which team is the best in the Shelby County League this season. That’s understandable after his Rockets ran away with the county golf meet Thursday at Shelby Oaks, finishing with a 323, 31 strokes better than runner-up Russia. The two teams share the league title after Thursday’s touurnament, which counts for half toward the overall champion. Russia edged Anna last week in the final dual match of the season, also at the Oaks, so both teams finish 11-1 overall.
“I’d like to see a different way to do that,” Kremer said. “But we all have bigger fish to fry. My kids’ goal is beyond this quite a way.” Kremer said the loss to Russia last week in the dual was added motivation to even the score Thursday against the Raiders. “I didn’t expect us to win by as much as we did,” Kremer said. “I don’t know what happened. I know my guys were really upset last week, and sometimes that’s all it takes.” Anna was led by the amazing play of a freshman, Luke Kindelin. He shot an even-par 72 and was 10 strokes better than the second-place finisher, Frank Boerger of third-place Fort Loramie. “”Luke played great this summer and he’s been right there all season,” said Kremer. “He won his flight in the club championship at the Oaks, so I expected a lot. And my seniors all worked hard, too. They know you have to put in the work over the summer. But Luke was really in a zone.” Anna’s top four took up four of the top seven spots in the meet. Nick Overbey shot an 83, Zach Koppin 84 and Brandyn Heitman 84. And Anna’s fifth man, Trey Billing, was 10th overall with an 88. Koppin, Overbey and Kindelin were all named to the all-county team, and Koppin won Player of the Year honors. Runner-up Russia was led by Derek Francis with an 83 and Nathan Wilson with an 89.
