ROCKFORD — Anna got the preliminaries out of the way Friday night. Now the Rockets can turn their full focus to their biggest game of the year. The Rockets rolled to their fourth straight win with a 48-6 dismantling of Parkway in Midwest Athletic Conference football action Friday night on the road. The win sets up a huge game Friday night at Anna, with defending Division IV state champion Coldwater invading to see who remains atop the conference standings.
“I was real happy with our kids,” said Anna head coach Bryan Rioch. “We kept telling them not to look past Parkway to Coldwater, and they came out ready to play. Now we can talk about Coldwater.” Anna put Friday’s game away with 35 points in the first half, including 21 in the second quarter. The Rockets had a star on offense and a star on defense. Junior running back Kameron Knight rushed for 152 yards on only seven carries, and scored three touchdowns. And on the defensive side of the ball, senior safety Chad Zumberger came up with three interceptions, returning his first for a touchdown in the opening quarter. “We talked about growing pains with the new coverage we put in this season,” said Rioch. “And Chad is really starting to figure it out.” The Rockets capped a first-quarter drive with a six-yard pass from Wes Hunsucker to Derek Billing for a 7-0 lead. When Parkway took over, Zumberger stepped in front of a pass and took it back 18 yards to paydirt for a 14-0 lead. The Rockets exploded in the second quarter behind Knight. He broke loose on a 75-yard scoring run, then followed that up with a three-yard run. “He’s just so fast,” said Rioch. “And he’s running behind two giants up front in Eric Niekamp and Justin Carr.” Before the half was over, Hunsucker would hit his second TD pass of the night, finding Dan Stewart from 30 yards out. Zach Clark was perfect on all seven PAT kicks. The Rockets added two more scores in the third quarter, the first coming from Knight from 47 yards out. Dexter Bensman, a sophomore running back, then took it in from 35 yards out. “We got off to a good start, and Parkway’s best player hurt his ankle pretty early in the game.So that hurt them. But I thought we executed real well,” Rioch said. The Rockets are now averaging 48 points per game. They rolled up 436 yards in total offense and held Parkway to just 253.
