Fort Loramie snapped a two-game losing streak and moved into sole possession of first place in the county girls basketball standings Saturday with a 72-23 rout of Fairlawn.

The Lady Redskins are now 7-2 on the season and a perfect 5-0 in the county, and the win, coupled with Houston’s loss to Anna, leaves Fort Loramie as the only unbeaten in league play at 5-0.

Fairlawn drops to 0-6 in the county and 2-8 overall as the Lady Jets reached the halfway point of the regular season.

After a slow start, Loramie kicked it into gear in the second quarter, going from an 8-4 lead after eight minutes to a 30-12 lead at the half.

Clair Ruhenkamp keyed the breakaway, scoring 10 points in the second period. She would go on to finish with 17, two behind leading scorer Janel Olberding, who had 19, 13 in the second half.

Anna deals Houston

first league setback

HOUSTON – The Anna Lady Rockets appear to be hitting their stride, going to Houston Saturday and upsetting the Lady Wildcats 50-41 in a key county game.

The win puts Anna at 4-1 in the county and 5-3 overall while dropping Houston to 4-1 and 7-2 and knocking the Lady Wildcats out of first place.

Anna overcame a 14-10 first-quarter deficit by outpointing Houston 13-4 in the second quarter for a 23-18 halftime lead.

Rebecca Burch tossed in 19 points to lead the Lady Rockets, and Carrie Watkins added 17, including three three-pointers.

Anna held Houston’s top two scorers, Kimmie Replogle and Jaclyn Willoughby, to a combined 14 points in the game. Heidi Taviano poured in 20 for the Lady wildcats, who were just 3-for-11 from the free throw line.

Russia gets past

JC in overtime

RUSSIA – Russia and Jackson Center hooked up in a thriller Saturday, with the Lady Raiders outscoring the Lady Tigers 13-7 in the overtime period to come away with a 57-51 victory in the third county game of the day.

The win puts Russia on the plus side in the county at 3-2 and overall at 5-4. Jackson drops to 1-4 in the county and 1-6 on the season.

Russia appeared to be in control, taking an eight-point lead into the final period at 36-28. But the Lady Tigers rallied back to knot the score at 44-44 after regulation.

Russia had outstanding balance, with four players in double figures, led by Brooke Gariety and Veronica Homan with 16 points apiece. Kristi Borchers added 11 and Katie Borchers finished with 10.

Jackson Center’s Taylor Cummons had a big day, leading all scorers with 26 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Kristen Winemiller added 13.

Botkins gets 5th win

BOTKINS – Botkins evened its record on the year at 5-5 with a 61-50 non-league win over visiting Parkway on Saturday.

The Lady Trojans used a big second quarter to nail down the verdict. They led just 15-10 after a quarter, but outscored the Lady Panthers 21-6 in the second quarter for a 20-point halftime lead.

Christie Fullenkamp again led the charge for Botkins, finishing with 21 points and just missing another double-double with nine rebounds. She had plenty of help on offense as Leah Schmerge finished with 14 points and Hannah Geyer added 10.

Clark gets 31

in Sidney loss

CLAYTON – Despite 31 points and six three-pointers by senior Marissa Clark, shorthanded Sidney came out on the short end of a 70-57 verdict against Northmont Saturday in Greater Western Ohio Conference crossover action.

The Lady Jackets fall to 4-6 with the loss and Northmont goes to 4-3.

Clark scored from all over, hitting six three-pointers in seven attempts, and getting to the free throw line 14 times, connecting on nine for the Lady Jackets.

Two other Lady Jackets had 11 apiece in Brittney Koester and Molly Schriber. Those two and Clark accounted for all but four of Sidney’s points, and those other four came from Leslie McKnight.

Sidney was without three key players. Sarah Karas and Brooke Lambert were too sick to even make the trip, and Leah Morris is out with a foot injury.

“Marissa had a great game,” said Sidney coach Don Cordonnier. “She kept us in it. Considering what the girls were up against, they hung in there. I was real happy with them.”

Lady Cavs fall

to St. Marys

Lehman didn’t get its offense going until the final period, and by then it was too late in a 51-41 loss to visiting St. Marys Saturday afternoon at Lehman.

The Lady Cavs fall to 3-7 at the halfway point of the regular season and St. Marys moves to 4-4.

Lehman trailed 36-24 after three periods and was unable to recover in the final quarter, outscoring the Lady Roughriders by just two at 17-15.

Christie Freytag finished with 17 to lead Lehman and Brooke Vanover added 11, nine of those coming at the line in 11 attempts.

Lehman was 15-for-19 from the line for the game.

Minster beats

Kalida 43-38

MINSTER – Minster notched an impressive win Saturday, beating a good Kalida team 43-38 in non-league girls action.

The Lady Wildcats are now 5-3 with the win and Kalida 6-4.

Minster led 22-16 at the half, but found itself deadlocked at 29-29 after three periods.

Once the Lady Wildcats got the lead in the final period, they were effective at the free throw line, hitting 8-for-12.

Delanie Wolf had 11 and Austi Weitzel finished with 10 to lead Minster. Kara Monnin had seven, and five of those came in the crucial final period.

Bremen breezes

To 8th victory

COVINGTON – New Bremen took on once-beaten Covington Saturday in non-league action and rolled to an easy 50-20 victory for its eighth win of the season.

The Lady Cardinals are now 8-1 on the season and Covington drops to 1-9.

Bremen led 12-5 after a quarter and 20-8 at the half.

Stacy Timmerman had 12 and Caitlin Chaney had 10 to lead New Bremen.
