ANNA — Anna and Russia slugged it out for four quarters, and Anna came away with a 38-34 victory in a key county girls basketball game Saturday at Anna. The win moves the defending league champion Lady Rockets into a first-place tie in the county standings, both at 6-2. Houston and Fairlawn are both just one game back. Overall, Russia is now 9-3 and Anna 8-4.
“It was back and forth the whole time,” said Anna coach Jeff Reese. “Both teams had their opportunities.” Russia led 18-15 at the half, but Anna came back to take a 25-23 lead after three periods. Anna freshman Rebecca Burch hit some key free throws down the stretch to help her team pull out the win. Kelli Barhorst had 20 of Anna’s 38 points. Hillary Monnin had 13 and Kristi Borchers 12 for Russia. The Lady Raiders were hurt by an injury to six-foot Katie Petty. She went down with what appeared to be a knee injury midway through the third quarter and was unable to return. Russia head coach Spencer Cordonnier said Sunday the extent of the injury wasn’t known, and added that Petty was planning to see a doctor today. Jackson Center gets 1st county win JACKSON CENTER — Jackson Center is no longer winless in county girls basketball action after beating Botkins 36-23 Saturday at Jackson. The Lady Tigers are now 1-7 in the county and 2-10 overall. Botkins drops to 1-6 and 4-9. “We don’t score a lot of points, so we have to do it with defense, and we’ve been working real hard on that the last couple weeks,” said Jackson head coach Gregg Gooding. “It really showed. The kids played hard and did a good job.” The win snapped a 10-game losing streak by the Lady Tigers, who won their first game of the season, but have come up empty since. The Jackson defense held Botkins to just six field goals and not a lot of shots, 26 for the game. Freshman Taylor Cummons led Jackson with 13 and was 4-for-5 from the line, and Miranda Doseck had 12. Loramie hands Houston costly loss FORT LORAMIE — Fort Loramie handed Houston a costly setback in county girls action Saturday, beating the Lady Wildcats 52-41. The loss knocked Houston out of a chance to move into a tie for first place with Russia and Anna in the standings. Houston trailed Russia by just one game going into Saturday’s play, and Russia lost to Anna. Had Houston won, it would have been a three-way tie at the top. Houston jumped to a 13-6 lead after one quarter, but Fort Loramie poured in 22 points in the second quarter to take a 28-25 lead at the half. Freshman Janel Olberding took over in the quarter, hitting five of her six shots and scoring 11 of her 13 points in that period. “The second quarter was huge for us,” said Loramie coach Carla Siegel. “Janel got hot and the other girls got her the ball.” It was still a three-point game after three periods, but Houston could manage just five points in the final period. Andrea Holthaus had 14, Janel Olberding 13 and Kelsea Otis 10 for Fort Loramie, which goes to 4-4 in the county and 5-8 overall. “Andrea really gave us a great game off the bench,” said Siegel. “She’s averaging two points a game and got 14. Kelsea had a great game with 10 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. It was her first career double-double. And Krista Watercutter did a great defensive job on (Jodi) Benanzer and also had five rebounds, three steals and three assists. So we had a lot of girls step up.” Houston, which drops to 5-3 and 9-4, got 13 points from Benanzer and 11 from Kimmie Replogle. Lady Jackets use free throws to win Sidney put the free throw line to good use Saturday to claim a 68-65 victory over Northmont in Greater Western Ohio Conference North Division girls action at the high school. Sidney is now 2-3 in the North and 3-9 overall. The Lady Jackets went to the line 40 times in the game and cashed in on 30 of them, with Stephanie Rickert knocking down 10 of 13, including 9-for-11 in the final period. Marissa Clark hit all five of her free throws, Ashley Roberts was 4-for-4 and Molly Schriber 6-for-7. “We’re starting to play better,” said Sidney coach Don Cordonnier. “We’re hitting our shots.” Sidney led by seven at the half and by five after three periods, but it came down to the final minute. Northmont trailed by one, but had the ball with under a minute left, but that’s when Cordonnier said EB Clark came up with the play of the game. “She knocked the ball away and got a layup,” he said. “The ball was headed out of bounds and I didn’t think she had a chance to get to it. It was just a great hustle play, and a big play in the game.” Marissa Clark finished with 17 points to lead four Sidney players in double figures. Rickert had 15, Roberts 13 and Brittney Koester 10. Roberts had a near double-double, adding nine rebounds. Northmont (65) Shellenberger 4-2-13; Gordon 5-2-14; Stoltz 4-1-9; Osa 4-2-10; Cromwell 4-1-9; Johnson 3-0-6; Smith 2-0-4. Totals: 26-8-65. But Versailles quickly opened the lead to nine and went on to a 55-43 victory over the Lady Cavaliers to remain undefeated. “We are very disappointed not to get a win today. But that is an elite team. They could be ranked first in the state when the polls come out next week. We are 10-2 and we just lost to a very good team. Now, we have to get ready for Lima Bath (Tuesday), who is also undefeated.” A big key for the Lady Tigers was the play of Emily Frey, who scored 14 points. “They have had trouble finding a third scorer after (Justine) Raterman and (Emily) Bohman,” Noftz said. “We left Frey unguarded at times because we didn’t think she could score like that and she came through for them. She scored eight of their 11 points in the second quarter.” Versailles opened a 21-12 lead after one quarter and never trailed in the game. “We got ourselves in a hole in the first quarter,” Noftz said. “And they just killed us on the glass. They outrebounded us 33-22 and had 17 offensive rebounds. We shot the ball well, but we just didn’t shoot the ball enough.” Lehman was 15 of 32 from the floor for 47 percent and nine of 10 from the line for 90 percent. Versailles was 25 of 42 from the floor for 60 percent and two of four from the line for 50 percent. Emily Bohman led the Tigers with 16 points and Justine Raterman scored 12. Sarah Freytag scored 13 points for Lehman and Jessica Slagle added 12. Versailles plays at Minster Thursday, while Lehman hosts unbeaten Lima Bath Tuesday.
